This is a list of changes you need our permission to make to your home or garden

Things you need our permission to do to your home 

If you want to make any of the following improvements or adaptations to your home you need our permissions. This includes:

  • install new light fittings or sockets 
  • install a Sky dish or TV aerial (permission will not be granted if you live in a building with a communal aerial system provided by Gentoo)
  • install hard wired house alarms
  • install a gas bayonet fitting 
  • install a media wall (the wall cannot include a fire)
  • renew internal or external doors
  • replace bath, shower, W.C. or hand basin
  • replace kitchen units, door fronts and worktops 
  • install kitchen appliances
  • install patio, French or bi fold doors
  • install a security lighting 
  • install an outdoor tap
  • install a car charging point
  • renew or relay a driveway
  • any structural work
  • any aids or adaptations

Before requesting permission, you should read any permissions statements that relate to your request to make sure your request meets all criteria.

How to get permission

Call us on 0191 525 5000 and select option 4 to speak to your local housing team.

If you live in sheltered housing or an extra care scheme, contact your Scheme Manager to get permission to decorate, improve or adapt your home.

If you live in a Passivhaus, such as Cherry Tree Gardens, please call us on 0191 525 5000 and select option 4 before making any improvements or adaptations to your home. 

If you have lived in one of our new build properties first less than 1 year, please call the Customer Care Team on 0191 525 5900 or email them on customercare@gentoohomes.com before requesting any permissions.

What happens after you ask for permission 

Your local housing team will let you know if you need permission to make an improvement or adaptation to your home. 

If your request requires permission our local housing teams will start looking into your request. This may include liaising with other departments, such as our gas and electrical teams.
