We are working with RE:GEN to improve the energy efficiency of homes across Sunderland

We recently announced the start of work to improve the energy efficiency of over 700 homes across Sunderland.

The first phase of work began in December 2024 following Gentoo being awarded £2.845million from the Government’s Social Housing Decarbonisation Wave 2:2 fund in 2024.

Gentoo have announced they are working in partnership with regeneration specialist RE:GEN Group to support the delivery of the energy efficiency improvement works due to complete in 2025.

The programme of works will install the following energy efficiency measures to homes across Sunderland:

•    Loft Insulation
•    Cavity wall insulation
•    Improved ventilation and draughtproofing
•    Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels
•    Low energy lighting
•    Smart, zoned heating controls

RE:GEN will be installing measures to 197 homes that has a works budget of £1.54million. Upon completion of work all homes achieve EPC Band C with Gentoo customers benefitting from a warmer and more energy efficient home.

Peter Akers, Director of Asset and Sustainability at Gentoo said: “We are delighted to be working with our partners at RE:GEN to support the delivery of our energy efficiency programme to more than 700 homes across Sunderland. We’ve made a great start to the work with support from our valued contractors who ensure we provide a quality service to our customers. Carrying out energy efficiency work and improvements is vital to ensuring our customers benefit from warmer homes and a reduction in energy consumption. I’m looking forward to seeing the results of our work which is bringing us a step closer to our target for all gentoo homes having an EPC rating of C or above by 2030.”

Simon Watson, Operations Director, RE:GEN North East said: “It’s great to be continuing our long term partnership with the team at Gentoo, delivering vital home upgrades. Customers are in safe hands—having delivered over £37m of SHDF-funded works and upgraded more than 4,000 homes, we know exactly what’s needed to provide a high-quality service. Work is progressing well and with customer focus at the heart of everything we do, we’re committed to ensuring a smooth and positive experience for all involved.”
