We are proud to be supporting Gas Safety Week 2024

We are proud to be supporting Gas Safety Week this week to raise awareness about the importance of gas safety in our homes.

As a landlord, we have a legal responsibility to complete a gas safety check once a year for all homes with a gas meter or gas pipework. This helps keep our customers, their families and neighbours safe from gas and carbon monoxide leaks.

In 2023/24, we recorded 6,303 missed gas service appointments. The missed appointments cost the Group around £441,210, that’s the equivalent to installing 238 new boilers.

This year for Gas Safety Week, the theme is ‘Checking—Every Check Counts’, emphasising the importance of regular gas safety checks. The theme highlights the significance of checking all gas appliances and encouraging people to prioritise gas safety in their homes. By showing how important every check is, Gas Safety Week aims to raise awareness and promote measures to ensure the safety and well-being of households.

James Haste, Director of Property Maintenance at Gentoo Group said:
“We are proud to be supporting Gas Safety Week. This year, we would like to remind customers of the importance of yearly gas safety checks. We make appointments for all customers to receive a gas safety check. The safety of our customers and neighbourhoods is our priority and these checks ensure your home, family and neighbours are safe and gas appliances are safe, secure and operating as they should be.”

Gentoo is taking the opportunity this Gas Safety Week to remind people that gas works should only ever be completed by a qualified, Gas Safe registered engineer, and should never be attempted as DIY. Tampering with gas appliances is illegal, extremely dangerous and poses risk to innocent people. At Gentoo, we have more than 80 colleagues who hold a Gas Safe Card and complete a 5-year cycle of training to maintain their skills to service or repair domestic gas appliances.

Amid the cost of the living crisis and rising gas prices, concerns are increasing around energy theft and the dangers of tampering with meters in order to save money. Gentoo is providing support to customers concerned about paying their energy bills through its Money Matters Team. Customers can get in touch by calling 0300 123 2004 or emailing moneymatters@gentoogroup.com.

To keep you and your family safe, follow Gas Safe Register’s top tips:

• Know the symptoms of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning; headaches, nausea, breathlessness, dizziness, collapse and loss of consciousness.
• Look out for warning signs your appliance may be unsafe, such as a lazy yellow flame instead of a crisp blue flame, error messages or unexpected noises from your boiler or dark and sooty stains around your gas appliance.
• Make sure you leave vents unblocked as these are there to help your appliance work safely and efficiently.
• If you smell gas or think there might be a gas leak, call the free 24-hour national gas emergency number immediately on 0800 111 999.
• If you are a Gentoo customer and your gas safety check appointment is unsuitable, contact us immediately to rearrange.
