76 tenants set to benefit from internal modernisation of multi-storey

A £3.8 million scheme to modernise Hedworth Court, a multi-storey in Sunderland has started.

The work which is set to modernise flats and improve the safety of the building is being delivered by Equans. Each flat will benefit from:

  • New kitchen
  • New bathroom
  • Installation of a new more efficient heating system
  • Electrical rewire

Tenants are able to choose from a range of options for worktops, doors and handles from Gentoos kitchen provider JTC Kitchens as well as a range of flooring colours. Tenants are also able to choose from a range of waterproof cladding to enhance the appearance of the new bathrooms, complemented with a choice of flooring options.

The scheme also sees the fire safety of the building improved through the installation of a sprinkler system and new fire alarm system in all flats and communal areas.

Sprinklers can contain or put out a fire before the fire service arrives. They can also reduce smoke and fire damage within the flat which allows residents to return home sooner following a fire in their flat.

Gentoo understands the work will be disruptive for tenants, that’s why they have committed to engaging with tenants throughout the work. Gentoo and Equans have organised a weekly drop-in to allow tenants to find out how work is progressing and ask any questions they may have.

Marc Edwards, Director of Asset and Sustainability at Gentoo Group said:

“We are committed to ensuring our buildings are safe, secure, and places where customers are proud to live.

“We understand this work will be disruptive for tenants, however the regular drop-ins will allow us to keep tenants updated and allow them to express any concerns they may have.

“Tenant engagement is crucial to the success of a scheme like this, giving tenants a choices of what will be fitted allows them add a personal touch to their home.”

Darren Sterling, Director of Regeneration & Sustainability at Equans, said:

“We are delighted to be building on our already successful relationship and cementing our common passion of building better communities for our customers with Gentoo through this project for residents at Hedworth Court. We’re looking forward to working closely with customers to completely revamp their homes and provide them with new kitchens and bathrooms as well more efficient heating and hot water systems which we hope they will enjoy for many years to come.

“Equans’ culture is centred on not only delivering exceptional services, but in adding legacy value which will ultimately benefit the communities in which we operate. It is this common commitment that makes for a strong partnership, and we look forward to working with Gentoo and our customers when delivering these important improvements.”

Hedworth Court consists of 76 two bed flats. You can view all of the Group's available properties to rent here:  www.gentoogroup.com/rentahome.
