Local group knitting for the community with grant funding from Gentoo

Pins and Needles Knitting Group has been awarded £500 through our Aspire Grant programme.

The donation means the group now has enough wool and materials to continue to meet every Wednesday for the rest of the year.

The knitting club meet at CHANCE Community Centre in Hendon and create a variety of different items including children’s cardigans, hats, blankets, toys, decorations and accessories. These items are then sold at local craft fairs, with the money being donated back into the club or to various charities.

Freda Grey, a volunteer at Pins and Needles Knitting Group said: “We were so pleased to receive a grant from Gentoo. We have used the money to stock up on wool and materials that will keep the group going for the rest of the year! The knitting group gets us all together and we hope everyone who buys our items loves them just as much as we loved creating them.”

Susie Thompson, Executive Director of Housing said: “Every Aspire Grant we provide contributes to our commitment of helping our local communities thrive. Gentoo is delighted to support the talented volunteers, helping them to create wonderful items for residents of Sunderland.”

Launched in 2003, our Aspire Grant programme offers grants of up to £500 and has benefited hundreds of local groups and organisations over the years. This includes art, music and drama clubs, toddler play groups, local football clubs, older people’s clubs and resident and community associations.
