More than 5,000 properties set to benefit from internal modernisation programme

We’re delighted to announce more than 5,000 homes in Sunderland are set to benefit from internal home improvements over the next four years.

The internal modernisation programme will see the Group invest £32 million over the four year programme.

Esh Construction and EQUANS have both been successful in securing contracts to deliver internal modernisations to tenants’ homes.

The work will take place across the city and will involve tenants’ homes benefitting from kitchen and bathroom replacements, electrical rewires and energy performance upgrades.

The investment will also see the modernisation of high-rise tower blocks and sheltered schemes in the city, with sprinkler systems being installed, heating upgrades, and communal area improvements. The Group engaged with tenants to gather feedback on what kind of furnishings they wanted to see being installed in their kitchens. Tenants selected options for worktops, doors and handles from JTC Kitchens.

As part of the scheme, Gentoo has partnered with JTC Kitchens to supply kitchens for the next seven years. Improvements for kitchens and bathrooms include soft close drawers and doors, waterproof bases to sink units and upstand finishes on worktops instead of tiling.

The contracts have been geographically allotted for efficiency and to benefit tenants.

Marc Edwards, Director of Asset and Sustainability at Gentoo Groupsaid:

“We are delighted to have awarded these contracts as part of our wider investment plan.

“This is a very exciting investment for Gentoo and the scheme demonstrates our commitment to enhancing our existing properties.

“Tenants are at the heart of everything we do at Gentoo and engaging with them throughout this process really demonstrates this.

We are looking forward to working with the contractors over the next four years to improve the homes of our tenants.”

Colin Ford, Construction Director at Esh Construction, said:

“This is a notable contract award for Esh’s refurbishment division, and we’re delighted to be working in partnership with Gentoo. Giving back to the local community is at the core of Esh’s values and throughout the scheme we will work with Gentoo to deliver a variety of social value initiatives and benefits across the local area.”

Will Kay, Regional Managing Director at EQUANS, said:

“Our work in the city has already seen thousands of homes renovated, with Gentoo tenants enjoying smart new kitchens and bathrooms and reduce energy usage through energy performance upgrades.

“We are very pleased to be continuing our long-standing, successful partnership with Gentoo Group by being appointed to modernise homes across Sunderland under this further significant programme of improvement.’’

If you are a Gentoo customer and your home is part of the schemes, you will be contacted directly by Gentoo or its contracting partners.
