Gas safety
We must complete a gas safety check once a year for all homes with a gas meter or gas pipework. This helps keep you, your family and your neighbours safe.
Reporting a gas leak
Call Northern Gas Networks on 0800 111 999 and they will visit your home within 2 hours.
Northern Gas Networks may also ask:
- how long you have been able to smell gas
- if the smell is inside or outside your home
- where your gas meter is
- if you can still smell gas after you turn the gas off
- if anyone else is affected by the smell
If you can smell gas or think you have a gas leak
You must:
- put out all flames, including cigarettes and candles
- leave all electric switches and plugs in whatever position they are in
- switch off your gas supply by turning a handle next to your gas meter so it is 90 degrees to the gas pipe
- open doors and windows to help air circulate and let the gas escape
- leave your home if the smell of gas is strong
Avoid using:
- mobile phones or other devices
- an electric door entry system if you have one
If you can smell, hear, see or feel gas outside your home, shut your windows and doors to stop the fumes getting inside.
Gas safety check
We have a legal responsibility to complete a gas safety check once a year for all homes with a gas meter or gas pipework. This helps keep you, your family and your neighbours safe from gas and carbon monoxide leaks.
If you stop us from completing your check, you may lose the right to use our repairs service.
Gas safety check appointment
We will send you a letter to let you know when we are coming to complete your check. There must be someone aged 18 or over at your home for this appointment.
Before and during the check you must:
- switch off all appliances
- not smoke inside your home
Rearranging your gas safety check
You cannot cancel your yearly gas safety check, but you can rearrange it. If you think a safety check is overdue or need to rearrange it, call us at once on 0800 5877 809.
After your gas safety check
We, or our contractor Morgan Lambert, may contact you to arrange an appointment to inspect the work completed during your safety check. This appointment is not legally required, but we appreciate everyone who is able to give us access to their home.
Your gas safety record
This will include details of any:
- faults we find during a check
- actions we or you need to take
You can view the gas safety record for your home within 28 days of a gas safety check. You can only view it online, using My Gas, because we no longer print paper copies.
You will need your 7-digit tenancy reference number and your date of birth. View your gas safety record.
If you cannot view your gas safety record, call 0800 5877 809.
