Chester Gate

Chester Gate is a proposed new housing development in the Pennywell area of Sunderland.

About the proposed development

The site is located to the north of Chester Road and to the south of Presthope Road. The site is brownfield and currently overgrown with vegetation. The proposed development has new routes that will connect the existing footpaths on Pickering Road, Presthope  Road, Portslade Road and the Phase 1 development.

The proposed layout has 296 new properties, consisting of two, three and four bedroom houses, two-bedroom bungalows and two-bedroom apartments. The properties will be available for Shared Ownership, affordable rent and/or social rent.

There is a national housing shortage with 1.2 million households on waiting lists for social housing and 250,000 people homeless. The clear local need for affordable housing is evident with 30,000 people on our housing waiting list in Sunderland.

The proposal will assist in helping to address the housing shortage and reduce our waiting list to make an important contribution towards the city’s housing supply, delivering much needed high quality affordable housing in the area.

The houses will have:

  • a spacious and contemporary design
  • features like air source heat pumps, solar panels, and enhanced insulation
  • a garden
  • at least one parking space

Development timeline

Consultation is now open for residents to provide feedback. It will close on Thursday 1 August 2024.

Residents living close to the proposed developments will receive a leaflet through their door which can be used to provide feedback.

Feedback can also be provided by completing an online questionnaire via the PlaceChangers website or Gentoo’s Your Gentoo Voice engagement portal.

An in person engagement event is also happening at Grindon Church Community Project, Galway Road, Grindon, Sunderland, SR4 8JZ at 2pm - 7pm on Wednesday 17 July and 8.30am - 1.30pm on Thursday 18 July. Residents are welcome to attend to look at plans and provide feedback.
